Today straight 10 minutes from my side on Cyber security & vulnerabilities in the Metaverse.
Let’s face it, Conversations are still like “Hey, we've designed something nice and cool. It's great.”
But nobody is going to come and say, “Hey, have you done the testing? Have you done the security audit?” And there's always going to be a grey area to it.
𝑰𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒉 𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 within The Metaverse makes it more challenging because of the false identity that the Avatars can act, while it is not Rahul, it can be somebody else impersonating me in The Metaverse saying I'm Rahul.
While that’s one thing with The Metaverse, there are even more problematic 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒅𝒊𝒈𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒕𝒘𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒔:
What if somebody goes and clicks on the 3D digital twin and switches off a coffee machine at the office? You don't need a layer of authentication. But if somebody goes and shuts down the cooling system of the nuclear plant, then there's a major drama waiting.
𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐜𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥.
I think the whole thought process in designing The Metaverse experience is not still around security.
We should focus on visualisation and creating checks and balances from day one with respect to ensuring that the overall ecosystem with respect to security inside The Metaverse is taken care of.
Shared my insights on the subject - Cybersecurity in The Metaverse at TechSci Research LIVE Webinar last evening.
Great to hear my fellow panellists Arijit Bhattacharyya and Abhishek Das
